Pressure-Based Leak Testing

A leak is a loss of gas or liquid from an element designed to contain it. Depending on the function of the element, acceptable leaks may be large (leakage across an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve) to almost undetectable (leakage through a metal weld). Pressurebased leak testing is most often used as a convenient way to check a part quickly and cleanly for larger leaks. Often, the leak test components are a subsystem of a larger machine that manufacturers parts. Pressure testing can be done in multiple ways, by pressure decay (the part is brought to a given pressure, and the pressure value decay is monitored as gas moves to the ambient lower pressure surrounding the part) or pressure rate-ofrise (the test element is evacuated to a certain value, and a pressure increase is monitored as gas from the outside atmosphere leaks into the volume).
