The variety of fuel types used by gas-powered engines such as gas turbines, internal combustion (IC) engines, boilers and fuel cell power plants is increasing over time. They include natural gas, syngas, coke oven gas, LPG, landfill gas and biogas. Even natural gas now comes from a variety of unconventional sources such as coal bed methane, shale gas, gas hydrates and tight gas reservoirs, resulting in a higher spread in its composition and characteristics. Furthermore, synthetic mixtures and blends are introduced into the pipeline such as during peak shaving to maintain the energy content during seasons of high demand, and therefore significantly varying the composition and consistency.
