In a laboratory at an altitude of 2675 m in the Schneefernerhaus (UFS) measuring station on the Zugspitze (2962 m) in the German Alps, KIT scientists modified an industrial 350 W XeCl excimer laser from Coherent and equipped the measurement setup with larger optics for signal acquisition to achieve better signal/ noise ratio (S/N). This allowed a 40 times better S/R compared to existing Raman lidar systems can be achieved. As a result, water vapor can now be detected with good accuracy up to a height of 20 km and measure faster than before by a factor of 10.
