LDC-37X6 Series Laser Protection

Download Whitepaper
The LDC-37X6 series of laser diode controllers have been designed with multiple levels of laser protection in order to minimize exposure to electro-static discharge, overly high laser current levels, and transients. The laser protection system of the LDC-3726, LDC-3736, and LDC-37620 models includes redundant current limits, output shorting relays, slow start and safe shutdown circuits, and safety interlocks. These design features protect against typical causes of laser diode damage including loss of power, electronic fast transients, intermittent contact, and power surge transients. This technical note will focus on the LDC-3736 Quantum Cascade Laser Controller, which is designed to safely drive Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) with up to 4 Amps of current and a compliance voltage of 18 Volts. QCLs are sensitive to rapid spikes in laser current level, also known as transients. QCLs are also sensitive to electrostatic discharge and excessively high laser current levels. While all subsequent protection features and test results will apply to the LDC-3726 and LDC-37620 model of controllers as well, the LDC-3736 was selected as the case study model for its QCL application.
