A recently published report on one of the largest surveys conducted to date about seafood fraud revealed that onethird of seafood species purchased at restaurants and grocery stores in cities across the Unites States were mislabelled. The study was conducted by Oceana, a non-profit international advocacy group, over a period of two years from 2010 to 2012, when over 1200 samples were collected from 674 retail outlets in 21 US states. DNA testing was performed on all the fish samples to correctly identify the fish species and uncover mislabelling.
