Typical optical systems are most often assessed through their resolution. While this may not be as relevant to amateur hobbyists who are more often concerned with the cost, size, aperture/focal length ratio, and type of telescope, it does still play a role in astronomy and is important to understand as a concept. It can be argued that the field of optics began through humanity’s curiosity with the stars and worlds outside of our own. Telescope-building is one of the oldest uses of optics and has been a practiced craft for many centuries.
