The high-quality IR anti-reflective coatings of type AR 10.6 contain extremely small quantities of the radioactive substance thorium. The thorium layer is embedded between other thin layers and thus forms a "sealed radioactive source". This means that no radioactive material can escape from the coating when it is undamaged. The outermost layer of the coating consists of a non-radioactive material that was chosen for its good mechanical properties in order to effectively protect the underlying layers.
