Insights into High-Speed Detectors and High-Frequency Techniques

With the advancement of high-transmission-rate systems and short-pulse lasers, many applications now require high time-resolution or equivalently, high frequency-bandwidth optical detection. For example, a high-speed photodetector can measure the frequency and time response of optical systems. This can include measuring the pulses of modelocked laser systems or detecting the data stream of a frequency-multiplexed communication system. A high-speed photodetector will give increased resolution in spectroscopy, including dynamic, pump-probe spectroscopy. Moreover, it can be used in laser heterodyning experiments and for millimeter-wave signal generation. However, even if your optical signal of interest is very fast, if your photodiode or electrical equipment, i.e. oscilloscope or spectrum analyzer, does not have sufficiently large frequency bandwidth, your final measured signal will be as slow as the slowest component of your system.
