Fire remains one of the most critical hazards aboard any crewed spacecraft. In orbit, there is no fire department to call — astronauts must manage the emergency entirely on their own. In a sealed environment, toxic gases and smoke particles spread rapidly through the air, threatening both human health and mission success. Microgravity makes the risk even greater. Without gravity to bring harmful particles down, they remain in the air exposing astronauts for longer periods and putting systems at greater risk than on Earth.
