Ethylene (IUPAC name: ethene) is the simplest olefin, or alkene, with the chemical formula C2H4. Production of more than 150 million tons of ethylene was forecast in 2012, up from 109 million tons in 2006. Approximately 60% of this stock has been used to produce polyethylene with the majority of the remaining stock used to produce ethylene oxide, ethylene dichloride and ethyl benzene.
