Thermal Performance of Mirror Mounts

Whether you are a laboratory researcher or an optical-equipment manufacturer, you’ll be concerned with how temperature changes affect your optical system. A stable mount will lead to improved optical-system performance as the ambient temperature changes. For example, the power stability of a laser made with stable mounts will be better than that from a system composed of inferior mounts. Not only should you be concerned with changes over only a few degrees (as exists in a laboratory) but also, you may want to understand how the system will perform through many decades of temperature variations (as exists in the field). And, if you are shipping the equipment, you will be concerned with survival conditions that exist while the equipment sits in an airplane, on a truck, or on a train. In this case, a mount free of hysteresis will result in a turn-key system that will not require realignment upon arrival.
