Due to the multifactorial nature of DED and the ever-changing landscape of diagnostic equipment and treatments, expert committees, including the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, have developed diagnosis and management algorithms to help guide practitioners. Artificial tears continue to be the first-line therapy, but optimal management may only be achieved by selecting tear formulations designed to manage specific dry eye sub-types.
