Most cases of AK occur in contact lens wearers and exposure of lenses to water has been identified as a key risk factor. Acanthamoeba is a free-living amoeba (single- celled microorganism), that can be found in the environment such as in air, water and soil. It can cause rare, but severe infections of the eye, skin, and central nervous system, although most Acanthamoeba infections affect the cornea.
