Viavi Solutions has launched a new near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer for rapid, handheld material analysis, the MicroNIR OnSite-W. It is the industry's smallest IP67-rated, fully-integrated spectrometer, designed for varied applications in agricultural, pharmaceutical and manufacturing industries. Its wireless Bluetooth connectivity to a PC or tablet makes it ideally suited to factory and field uses. The OnSite-W is on display at PITTCON 2019 from March 19-21, 2019, at booth #3400.

Advancements in miniaturized NIR spectroscopy are opening new applications for material analysis across a wide range of industries. Measurements and material qualifications that once took days when conducted by technical personnel in a laboratory can now be done instantly in the field by nontechnical workers. Migrating capabilities from the lab to the field leads to better, more efficient process monitoring and better, faster decision-making.

Material characterization applications include food, feed, agriculture, pharmaceutical, chemical, and security markets. The OnSite-W is especially suited to pharmaceutical raw material identification (RMID), characterization of agricultural products in the field, and qualification of processed food and feed products.

The OnSite-W spectrometer features the proprietary VIAVI Linear Variable Filter (LVF) technology, which eliminates all moving parts and enables a robust instrument that delivers repeatable measurements. It holds an IP65 and IP67 rating for use in wet and dusty environments and the MIL-PRF-28800F Class 2 shock and vibration rating.

The spectrometer includes MicroNIR Pro 3.0 software, a major upgrade to the popular VIAVI chemometrics modeling software suite. The new PLS quantitative model-building tool means that no third-party software is required to build complete chemometric applications. A dedicated tablet application provides users with a simplified interface for rapid predictions in the field. Enhancements to the system now streamline workflow and simplify user, method and data management.

According to Steve Saxe, Product Line Manager, MicroNIR, VIAVI, the OnSite-W and Pro 3.0 Software Suite embody the features and functions most requested by users and the market: a small, wireless, rugged, reliable, and simple to use system for the field and unpredictable environments. The spectrometer and new software are powerful additions to the MicroNIR suite of products, providing an un-tethered option for material analysis and putting rapid NIR-spectroscopy in the hands of non-technical users, a process once exclusive to laboratory technicians.
