Lumics, a specialist in high-performance laser diode technology, is emphasizing its proprietary chip technology designed to deliver high output power, flexible wavelength design, and exceptional long-term reliability for demanding photonics applications.
At the core of Lumics’ chip technology is a patented laser diode facet passivation process that protects the front and rear facets of edge-emitting ridge waveguide laser chips. This crystalline, defect-free passivation layer minimizes optical absorption at the facets, significantly reducing the risk of catastrophic optical mirror damage (COMD) - a common failure mechanism in high-power laser diodes.
The non-absorbing nature of the passivation layer, effective down to wavelengths below 750 nm, enables greater wavelength flexibility while maintaining stable operation and extended device lifetime. This makes the technology suitable for both single-mode and broad-area laser designs, where high power density and reliability are critical.
Lumics manufactures its laser diode chips largely in-house using compound semiconductor heterostructures, primarily based on GaAs/AlGaAs with InGaAs or GaInAsP quantum wells, as well as InP and GaSb material systems for other wavelength ranges. This approach provides strong carrier confinement, efficient thermal and electrical conductivity, and adaptable optical design.
By combining robust facet protection with proven semiconductor architectures, Lumics’ chip technology supports high-power operation without compromising reliability, addressing the needs of applications that demand consistent performance over long operating lifetimes.
